i can't help it
I have so many things I need to be doing, but I keep messing around with our camping trip photos. I just can't help myself!
ten on TUESDAY
1. Went camping this last weekend and just got back last night. Had a great time. Went to a campsite in the Sierra National Forest called Dinkey Creek. I really started enjoying myself once I found out there haven't been bears in those parts for years. Internally I breathed a huge sigh of relief and allowed myself to just enjoy the whole experience. I know that might sound strange because I do realize that there are those of you who WANT to see wildlife on a camping trip. But not me. I can deal with all the rest, but please, oh please don't let me see a bear.
2. Yes, my new blog banner was from the trip, on the first day actually. The kids are sitting right next to where our tent was about to go up.
3. So I got some really fantastic shots that I hope to soon share at some point... And I got some really crummy ones due to me just not paying attention to my shutter speed. On the one hand I am really disappointed with myself because I loused up what I hoped would go "big" on the wall maybe in the form of a canvas - there were certain shots that I intentionally set up and prepared for that just didn't come out. Bummer. On the other hand, I got some awesome snapshots that absolutely make my heart sing.
4. My husband says we just need to go back soon for a re-do on all the shots I messed up. Not totally against that idea. I could've stayed a week.
5. Okay, I realize every point involves camping somehow... Sorry. But guess what I did during our four day camping trip?! I read a book! Yes, I actually read a book, something I haven't done in a very long time. I read, and I'm almost embarrassed to say it, but I read Twilight. Okay, why would I be embarrassed? Because number one, I realize that I am the last one on the planet to have gotten into that book/story/movie etc. I feel a little dopey. My sister will be shocked when she finds out I finally read it. Secondly, I haven't really been interested in it. I really and truly felt it was a little teeny-bopperish. Sorry if that offends anyone. Thirdly, apart from being a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan once upon a time, I'm really not that interested in the vampire topic. I wasn't really enticed by that.
6. (Moving on to a sixth point because this is just too long to not break up...)
Why did I take that book? Well, once I realized I was going to be away from the internet, and email, and work for four days... and I was going to be in a really slow-paced environment where I should be able to relax... Well, I decided I should take a book. But what book? I think its kind of comical that my first choice was to buy the new Laura Bush book because I am really interested in reading that. Then I decided maybe I would just see what all the hooplah was about Twilight. I think what really pushed me forward was knowing that other moms from school loved the series too and it was those moms that lent me the first four books.
And what do I think now? Well, I wasn't disappointed and I am hooked. HOOKED. I was able to block out everything else going on around me and read at every chance I got. There I was in my tent at night with my lantern and book, not putting it down until my eyes got too heavy or the cold air became more than I could bear. I finished it this morning. I just couldn't put it down till I finished it.
Wow, I have seriously forgotten how great it is to read a good book, but definitely, having a large amount of time to do it is what I needed. Life is too busy otherwise.
7. So now I have two things that I'm fighting off doing because I seriously shouldn't be taking the time for: Finishing up my Desperate Housewives series - I'm in the middle of season four. And now reading the rest of the Twilight Series. I'm doomed.
8. Backtracking to last week, before the whole camping thing... Emma is officially now a First Grader. She had the best year in Kindergarten. Her teacher was awesome and Emma was like a sponge, just soaking it all in beautifully. Her notable accomplishments: She was given the first Student of the Month award for her Kindergarten class back in September, she completed all thirty-two of the sight word lists (thirty of those lists are first grade sight words), and she was given one of the major roles in their end of the year Kindergarten opera. Oh yes, my daughter had a singing role in the play and it was awesome (if not nail-biting for this mama) to watch. It was just a super terrific year and we are so very proud of how far she has come.
9. My husband has the whole week off this week! What a great way to kick off our summer!
10. I'm happy to be home. I'm anxious to catch up on work stuff so I can work on personal photos. I'm excited to make summer plans with friends, new and old. And hey, my favorite holiday is not even a week away!
